Luke 24:44-53

These verses describe one of the resurrection appearances of Jesus to his disciples. It was the final appearance before he was taken up to heaven in what we know as the ascension. During the discourse, Jesus helped his disciples understand the scriptures. He did the same with the two disciples he encountered on the road to Emmaus. Jesus also charged them with being witnesses of all that he had spoken. They would receive the promise of the Holy Spirit but would have to wait on the Lord in Jerusalem for further instructions. Let us pay attention to the sacramental language in verse 47. Jesus said that “repentance and forgiveness of sin is to be proclaimed (kēryssō) in his name to all nations” (v. 47, NRSV). This reminded me of the same language found in Paul’s account of the Lord’s Supper. Paul said, “For as often as you eat this bread drink the cup, you proclaim  (kataggellō) the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 Cor. 11:26, NRSV). Although different Greek words are used, both speak of preaching and proclaiming. The continued celebration of the Lord’s Supper is preaching the universal presence of Christ in the Holy Spirit as promised by God.  Grace and peace, Pastor Bob
