Sermon 12-13-09 "Living Beyond Understanding -- Part 1" Phil. 4:4-7; Eph. 3:18-20 by Rev. Robert Lee

Sermon Notes

“Living Beyond Understanding”
Philippians 4:4-7; Ephesians 3:18-20 Third Sunday of Advent
December 13, 2009 by Rev. Robert Lee

“God is immanent (so close) and yet transcendent (so utterly above and far from us). God is knowable, yet he is unknowable. God is inside us and beside us, yet he is wholly different from us. For this reason Augustine wrote, ‘If you understand, it is not God you understand’” (Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality. Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 2006, p. 129).

  • When life comes at you fast, Scripture assures us of God’s IMMANENCE -- (Phil. 4:5).

  • Our nature is to WORRY and lose FOCUS on God. Scripture reminds us not to worry – (4:6).

  • Scripture encourages us to pray in everything – HANG ON to God! – (4:6b).

  • Scripture promises God’s TRANSCENDENCE – (Phil. 4:7; Eph. 3:18-20).
