There are lots of voices that we hear as we go through the average day: media, peers, family, pride, ego. Where is God in all this? How can we filter our audible intake so that we can listen to the voice of God? I read a passage from Exodus today where the people of Israel wanted Moses to do their listening for them. The devotional writer suggests that the problem with this is "...when [we] only hear God from secondary sources it's easier not to make any real commitment, or to obey what [we] have heard."
So how do we listen to God? How do we hear his voice? In John 10:4, Jesus said that the sheep follow the shepherd because they know his voice. Knowing the Shepherd's voice comes from spending time with him. One primary way to listen to the voice of God is through reading the Bible. Pray that God will help you spend time in the Bible. Nothing is as important as learning to know God's voice when he speaks to us!
Here's a Rembrandt painting that I came across which depicts Jesus teaching his disciples. It's entitled "Jesus Among His Students." It's linked to Matthew 6:3 with Jesus giving instruction to his followers. Let us pray: "Father, help me to listen to your voice and follow your teachings. Amen." Blessings, Pastor Bob
