Sunday April 20, 2008 by Rev. Bob Lee In John 14:6 Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (NIV). When a person becomes a believer in Jesus Christ, he or she is promised eternal life (see John 3:16). I’d like to focus on the word life for a moment. There are two Greek words in the New Testament that we find translated as “life” -- bios and zōē. Bios refers to physical life, such as that of the animal kingdom; while zōē refers to the fullness of life which is experienced in Christ. John’s Gospel uses the Greek word zōē in 14:6 as well as in 3:16. In fact, the source I consulted tells us that the fourth Gospel uses zōē rather than bios in every occurrence of the word translated “life.” I consider zōē to be the “in Christ life” wherein we abide in Christ as Christ and the Father are one (14:10). And it is what Romans 6:4 promises in our baptism, “that we walk in newness of life.” So for me, the image of the resurrection in the act of baptism is a “new life” promised by God. Paul writes, “So if anyone is in Christ (italics mine) there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!” (2 Corinthians 5:17, NRSV). Baptism in Christ is realized in the fullness of life for today and for all eternity. God's blessings, Pastor Bob
